UNISONg is a non-auditioned, come-when-you-can, performing is optional women's community choir based in Wagga Wagga, NSW. It focuses on supporting, inspiring, empowering and building community in a safe and inclusive environment through meaningful and importantly, fun musical connection – regardless of musical ability.
The choir began in June 2021. It aims to be diverse and inclusive and use singing to connect and empower its members. In 2024, due to the continued growth of the choir, (over 50 women come at least twice a month to a rehearsal), the volunteer committee found a new venue, the recently completed Duke of Kent Community Centre (Shaw St), which was built by Wagga Wagga City Council and is very centrally located.
UNISONg provides a supportive and inclusive environment for members to meet each week (if possible) and improve their well-being through meaningful and directed musical connection.
Wagga's UNISONg Women’s Community Choir aims to improve connection, safety, mental health and wellbeing in our local community. Professor Sarah Wilson, a leading researcher on the neurological benefits of music, says that “music is to mental health what sport is to physical health and it improves self-confidence, teamwork and social skills.”
Singing in a group strengthens a community’s social connection, health education and wellbeing outcomes, including mental health.
Tania de Jong, Australian soprano, said, “When we sing with others there is something really magical as we sing in harmony together. Not only do we breathe together, but studies have shown that our hearts start to beat together.”
A healthy community choir = a healthy community heartbeat
